Sass For Girls
About Us
What is Sass For Girls?
Sass (School and social development skills) For Girls is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO 128-311) founded by students from the University of Cape Town. It is a youth development organisation aimed at young girls in the Western Cape. We are currently working with grade 11 & 12 learners at Langa High School. All these girls come from disadvantaged backgrounds with many of them having poor self-image and no real drive for success.
It is our belief that through the right combination of information, mentorship and skills development we can help these girls make a successful transition from high school to university and beyond. We would like to help the girls develop life skills that will equip them for success. Drawing from our own experiences and a passion to make a difference we are capable of delivering these skills to the girls efficiently and effectively.
This program is one of a kind in that we are solving the inequality problem at a ground level and the skills that the girls learn through Sass will have a lasting impact on their lives.
What exactly do we do?
-
Conduct a series of inspirational talks by us and occasional guest speakers.
-
Skills building workshops. These serve to build confidence and provide knowledge. We have workbooks where the girls record the lessons they have learnt. We have them build their public speaking by encouraging them to share their ideas.
What would we like to do in the future?
-
As part of the program we would also like to have excursions to introduce the girls to all the opportunites available in South Africa e.g. trips to university campuses and career fairs.
-
High School Science Texts provides free textbooks online for different grades and subjects and we would like to print these for the girls as they have been proven to be successful in exam preparation.
-
Have a leadership camp for the year and empower them for 2015. Set goals and see all these throughout th year.
How can YOU help Sass For Girls?
The organisation is currently being funded from our own pockets as well as additional funds from parents. In order to have maximum impact we are in need for more funds for things such as printing of the workbooks used every week, tutoring materials, trips and the camp.
Any form of contribution (funding or volunteering) would be greatly appreciated and would go a long way in enhancing the girls' lives and shaping their future.
